In Closing

There you go. My hits of the festival. I just wish I wouldn’t have had my stupid allergies kick in. I was basically a walking pile of phlegm for a couple days, popping allergy and vitamin pills in a vain attempt to breathe. But through all of the dirt and phlegm and porta potties and rotten egg-smelling showers, Cornerstone still emerges as one of the greatest experiences that I think anyone can have.

Several days of camping with Christians from different backgrounds and lifestyles in a completely non-judgmental, liberated atmosphere—well, there’s something invigorating about it. Once again, it just reaffirms that our God loves diversity in people and diversity is one of the things that Cornerstone is about.

Before I go, I want to send props and big love out to the following people: Juan, Daniel, Nathan, Rachel, Denise, Sydney, Scott, Audra, Dagny, Orlando the werewolf, Joe and Jamie Beard, Kristen and Mike, Don, and any of the other hip cats that I met but may have forgotten. All of you are what Cornerstone 1997 made special to me!

I also want to apologize to the friends I went down with for being a miserable person to have around while my allergies afflicted me. You guys are the greatest!!!

God’s Blessing to all…

The Bands

I’ll admit it. The main reason I come to Cornerstone is to see the bands. I know that there are wonderful speakers and that I could really benefit from seeing them and listening to them, but I go to see the bands.

Actually, I did go to one seminar. It was about The Simpsons, one of my favorite TV shows. The seminar was about how the Simpsons might be one of the greatest pro-family shows on television, which I find quite interesting. But I digress.

I’m not going to list all of the shows I went to, but I’m going to tell you the ones that really impressed me. Here goes, in some semblance of chronological order.

Overview

Well, where should I begin? In case you were wondering, Cornerstone is a Christian arts and music festival every year during the 4th of July weekend in Bushnell, Illinois. 150 or so Christian bands from all sorts of genres, seminars on a wide variety of topics, speakers, art exhibits, and fellowship draw about 20,000 people or so annually to this small Illinois town. This year, it drew myself and 8 of my friends.

I’m not going to bore you with the entire trip, with all of the little details. I’m not going to give you an hour by hour breakdown of our trip. Rather, I thought I’d give you some of my impressions about the festival, as well as some the highlights for me. If you want to know all of the gritty, juicy details, e-mail me and I’ll tell you more than you want to know.

Basically, we left from Lincoln, Nebraska around 12:30 or 1:00 on Monday, June 30 and arrived in Bushnell at about 10:30 that same night. After quickly setting up camp, we hit the hay. Since the festival didn’t start until Wednesday, we had basically had all of Tuesday to goof off. I spent most of the day reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, trying to stay cool, or looking for my friends from the Velvet Empire.

I finally hooked up with them on Wednesday, and the rest of the festival was spent just hanging out and having fun with them. They were some of the coolest people I met.

In my opinion, that was the coolest thing of the fest. The bands were great and wonderful, but by the time the fest was done, I was so tired and run down that I couldn’t get into the shows. Having really bad allergies didn’t help with that, either. But, I got to meet so many wonderful people. That was probably the greatest thing of the fest, for me.
