Sigur Rós’ Heima

I’ve had the great fortune of seeing Sigur Rós in concert several times (here’s one concert review and here’s another).  To describe their concerts as “amazing” would be a vast understatement, and when the band is at the height of their powers, and tearing through a song like “Svefn-G-Englar”, “Ný Batterí”, or “Hafssól”, then there really are no words to describe them.

I get that same feeling watching the beautiful trailer for Heima, a tour documentary shot during the band’s 2006 Iceland tour, during which they played shows in small villages and outdoor settings throughout the country—as well as a performance in front of 40,000 people in Reykjavik.

“Heima” translates as “at home” or “homeland”, and if the trailer is any indication, the film is as much a lovesong to Iceland as it is a chronicle of the band’s tour.  Stunning shots of Iceland’s beautiful, and sometimes alien, scenery is interspersed with performance footage in small town bars, in forest clearings, on glaciers, in garages, and so on.

Heima is due out November 5, 2007.  Other projects in the queue include: Hvarf-Heim, a two-disc compilation of unreleased tracks and acoustic versions of the band’s more popular songs; a DVD and CD release of Odin’s Raven Magic; and a new album.
